APPG FCA whistleblower probe demand follows death of Simon Andriesz

An All-Party Parliamentary Group has called for an independent APPG FCA whistleblower probe following the death of former banker Simon Andriesz, whose 35 years in the securities industry ended with him raising concerns about financial wrongdoing and, according to the parliamentary group, facing alleged retaliation for doing so.

The All-Party Parliamentary Group on Investment Fraud and Fairer Financial Services said Andriesz’s case, considered alongside testimony from other whistleblowers, raised serious questions about how the Financial Conduct Authority treats individuals who come forward to report misconduct. The APPG did not limit its concern to a single case; it framed Andriesz’s experience as representative of a broader pattern it believes warrants formal independent scrutiny.

A record that extended well beyond the FCA’s doors

What gives this call its weight is the external recognition Andriesz received from regulators outside the United Kingdom. According to the Transparency Task Force, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission gave him a formal whistleblower award, and HM Revenue & Customs issued a substantial determination concerning matters he had raised. Those are concrete, official recognitions of the substance of his disclosures, not merely internal assessments. His case was also featured in the BBC’s File on 4 broadcast on 14 July 2026, in a programme that examined his story alongside wider questions touching on financial regulation and public accountability.

For portfolio-minded readers, the significance here is institutional rather than investment-specific. A functioning whistleblower regime is part of the infrastructure that underpins market integrity. If individuals with legitimate concerns face deterrents to coming forward, the information that regulators depend on to protect consumers and maintain orderly markets is diminished. The APPG FCA whistleblower probe demand is, in that sense, a question about regulatory effectiveness, not simply about one person’s treatment.

Retirement income expectations reveal a generational gulf

Separately, research commissioned by Mattioli Woods and carried out by YouGov illustrates just how wide the gap in retirement expectations has become across age groups. UK adults on average believe they will need £42,456 a year after tax, in today’s money, to feel financially secure in retirement, equivalent to £3,538 a month. Those figures conceal a sharp divide by age.

Adults aged 18 to 24 expect to need £55,272 a year, or £4,606 a month, in retirement. Adults aged 55 and over put the figure at £36,252 a year, or £3,021 a month. The annual gap between those two groups stands at £19,020. A separate regional divide is equally pronounced: the annual difference between London and the North East is £21,060.

The research also captures the threats respondents identify as most pressing. Some 40% cited rising living and housing costs as a major threat to long-term financial security. Close behind, 39% named unexpected health or long-term care costs, and 26% highlighted the risk of running out of money in later life. A further 25% pointed to unexpected major expenses or family financial responsibilities.

For someone in or approaching drawdown, those anxieties are familiar and not unreasonable. Sequence-of-returns risk and longevity risk are precisely the forces that inflate real-world income requirements beyond what pre-retirement modelling typically projects. The expectation gap between younger and older cohorts may partly reflect that those closer to retirement have recalibrated their expectations downward through lived experience, or simply that younger savers have not yet stress-tested their assumptions against actual costs.

National Friendly adds mortgage income protection

National Friendly has launched a short-term income protection product specifically designed to cover mortgage payments. The mutual’s Mortgage Protect proposition is aimed at addressing what it describes as the main barriers to protection conversations: complexity, time, confidence and affordability. For clients who have resisted traditional income protection on cost or simplicity grounds, a targeted mortgage payment product may represent a more accessible entry point into the protection market, even if it leaves other income risks uncovered. As with any income protection product, buyers should review the policy terms carefully, paying particular attention to the definition of incapacity and any deferral periods before benefit is triggered.

The APPG has not set a deadline for its requested investigation, and the FCA has not yet publicly responded to the call for an independent review of its handling of the APPG FCA whistleblower probe request.
