Canaccord Wealth has appointed Adam Smith as chief operating officer of its wealth planning division, a hire the firm positions as central to its ambition to unite financial planning and investment management within a single, integrated client proposition. Smith joins from Quilter, where he spent two years leading the firm’s advice transformation programme.

A depth of experience behind the Canaccord Wealth planning COO role

According to PAM Insight, Smith brings more than 25 years of industry experience to the role. Before Quilter, he served on Fairstone’s executive committee for six years, where he was responsible for discretionary investment management arm Fairstone Private Wealth. His career also spans senior positions at Intrinsic, Cofunds and Legal & General, giving him exposure to advice networks, platform businesses and institutional asset management alike.

In his new role, Smith will focus on improving operational efficiency, enhancing the client experience and supporting the continued development of the wealth planning business. Managing director Duncan Stratford said the appointment would help the firm build on investment already made in its integrated wealth management proposition. Stratford added: ‘Adam has a strong track record of leading change and developing propositions with the needs of clients and advisers at the centre, a vital capability as we continue to deliver the highest standard of service possible to our clients.’

Smith said of the appointment: ‘Canaccord Wealth has real momentum and ambition to bring wealth planning and investment management together as one integrated proposition for clients. I’m looking forward to working with the team to transform the model and infrastructure that will achieve this ambition, help drive the next phase of growth for the business and deliver the best outcomes for clients.’

What integration means for a balanced portfolio approach

For investors and advisers evaluating wealth managers, the drive to combine financial planning with discretionary investment management under a single roof carries genuine implications. An integrated model, in principle, reduces the friction between a client’s financial plan and how their portfolio is constructed and rebalanced. Whether it also improves risk-adjusted outcomes depends on execution: combined propositions can align interests well, but they can equally introduce conflicts between advice and investment management that a fully independent structure does not face.

The appointment is consistent with a broader industry pattern. Wealth managers have, for some time, been consolidating advice and investment functions to reduce referral risk, improve client retention and support scale. Canaccord Wealth oversees £40.3 billion of assets across the UK and Crown Dependencies and employs more than 750 people across 14 offices. At that scale, the operational infrastructure underpinning a wealth planning division carries material weight: inefficiency in client onboarding, suitability processes or reporting can erode the client experience faster than investment performance alone.

For a client in drawdown, or approaching retirement and reviewing their choice of wealth manager, the question is whether integration delivers demonstrably better outcomes or whether it is principally a commercial efficiency play. Smith’s stated focus on both operational infrastructure and client experience suggests the firm is attempting to address both simultaneously, though the proof will be in execution over the coming years.

Investors with assets held through Canaccord Wealth’s planning division should note that structural changes of this kind, while often positive over a five-to-ten-year horizon, can introduce short-term operational risk as new processes and reporting frameworks bed in. Those in drawdown, where sequence-of-returns risk is at its most acute, may wish to ensure their adviser remains focused on portfolio stability through any transition period rather than on internal reorganisation.

Smith’s appointment takes effect as Canaccord Wealth continues to develop what Stratford described as its integrated wealth management proposition, with the new COO mandated to drive that transformation from an operational and infrastructure standpoint.
