SJP Technical Connection closure to shut out external advisers by March 2027

St James’s Place (SJP) has confirmed the SJP Technical Connection closure to external users, with access to the Techlink service ending on 6 March 2027. From the following day, the service will be available solely to advisers within the SJP group, cutting off a resource that financial planning firms, product providers and other retail financial services businesses have relied upon for the best part of a decade.

What Technical Connection provides, and who it currently serves

SJP acquired Technical Connection in 2016, and the business has continued to serve clients outside the group throughout that period. Its offering spans guidance on taxation, trusts, pensions and investments, supported by helplines, consultations, email support and professional development resources. For smaller advice firms in particular, that breadth of technical support can be difficult to replicate through in-house resource alone.

Technical Connection‘s Managing Director, Tony Wickenden, is a longstanding figure in the financial planning profession. Speaking to Money Marketing, he said: ‘Technical Connection has been an enormous part of my life, and its standing was built by an exceptional team. I am immensely proud of what we have achieved together, the standards the business has stood for and the contribution it has made to the advice profession.’ Wickenden added that he would be sharing ‘some exciting developments next week’, though he declined to discuss his own next steps in the context of the announcement.

External users will continue to receive new content on the Techlink website as normal up to and including 6 March 2027. After that date, access closes to anyone outside SJP.

What the SJP Technical Connection closure means for portfolio planning firms

SJP has described this as a strategic decision to bring the proposition fully in-house, focusing the service exclusively on its own adviser network. That framing is straightforward enough from SJP’s perspective: concentrating a specialist resource on the group’s own distribution reduces complexity and, presumably, cost. For the external firms that have depended on Techlink, the calculus looks rather different.

Technical and regulatory questions do not stop arriving because a convenient reference service has closed. Taxation, trust structuring, pension legislation, and the layered guidance from bodies such as the Financial Conduct Authority continue to evolve, and the firms that have used Techlink will now need to source that expertise elsewhere. Options range from building in-house capability, subscribing to alternative technical research services, or, as one industry observer has noted, engaging specialist tax and trust counsel directly, though the cost differential between those routes can be considerable for a small advice practice.

For portfolio managers and SIPP trustees considering the broader implications, this development is a reminder that operational dependencies carry their own category of risk. A technical support service embedded in a firm’s compliance and planning workflow is not easily switched off and replaced overnight. Firms with a 2027 time horizon have roughly eighteen months to identify and bed in an alternative. Those who delay that process risk a gap in their technical support at precisely the moment a client query or a regulatory change demands a prompt answer.

From a capital-preservation and risk-management standpoint, the lesson is familiar: over-reliance on any single external provider, however well regarded, leaves a firm exposed when commercial priorities at the provider level change. The SJP Technical Connection closure is a case study in that principle, arriving with reasonable notice but demanding an active response rather than a passive wait for March 2027. Wickenden’s anticipated announcement next week may shed further light on what future provision could look like for the profession he has served.
