UK Advice Gap Demand Stays High as Millions Search Without Guidance

UK advice gap demand remains robust, data from lead generation specialist Inzuzo shows, even as the proportion of UK adults actually receiving regulated financial advice stays persistently low. The firm tracks around 150,000 online searches each month across financial advice-related terms, covering enquiries about financial advisers, pension consolidation and accessing tax-free cash.

Retirement is the single largest driver of that demand, accounting for more than half of all enquiries Inzuzo receives. The core age group searching online is 54 to 66, with demand peaking among 64 and 65-year-olds as retirement decisions become pressing. For portfolio-builders watching longer-term demographic trends, that pattern is consistent with the wave of defined-contribution savers now approaching drawdown age.

A Vast Untapped Market for UK Advice Gap Demand

Perhaps the most arresting figure in Inzuzo’s data is that 95% of consumers it speaks to have never previously received regulated financial advice. Richard Ardron, chief commercial officer at TFAS Enterprises, argues this points to a substantial pool of people actively seeking professional help for the first time. ‘For many, the challenge isn’t recognising that they need help. It’s knowing where to go and finding an adviser they trust,’ he said.

That distinction matters. Consumers entering the advice market for the first time, Inzuzo finds, show little strong preference between independent and restricted advice. Trust in the adviser and confidence in the process carry more weight than the regulatory category of the firm. For advice businesses, the implication is that accessibility and communication quality may be as commercially important as breadth of product range.

Delivery Preferences and the Role of Economic Uncertainty

Face-to-face meetings remain the preferred channel across all age groups. Around 60% of consumers under 55 favour face-to-face contact, rising to approximately 80% among those aged over 70. Video meetings attract roughly 25% of under-55s but only around 10% of those over 70. For advice firms designing their service model, the data suggests a hybrid approach is necessary rather than optional, particularly if the target client is approaching or in retirement.

Demand also responds to broader economic and political conditions. Inzuzo notes that searches around pensions and inheritance tax increase around major announcements, such as the Budget. Ardron observes that consumers can become more cautious during periods of heightened uncertainty before pent-up demand returns as conditions stabilise. That cycle is familiar to anyone who has watched client behaviour around interest rate decisions or fiscal events, and it is a reminder that advice businesses benefit from consistent marketing rather than reactive campaigns.

Ardron adds that consumers referred to advisers through Inzuzo hold, on average, £250,000 or more in assets, a level at which the complexity of tax planning, pension consolidation and drawdown sequencing makes regulated advice from a Financial Conduct Authority-authorised firm genuinely valuable. ‘We’re seeing people with genuine financial needs actively searching for professional help, many of whom have never engaged with an adviser before,’ he said. The market exists; the profession’s task is to meet it.
