The Right Academy maps the route to mortgage adviser competent status

Mortgage adviser competent status, the regulatory milestone at which a trainee is judged fit to give advice without supervision, is the destination that The Right Mortgage & Protection Network has built its new training academy around, having launched The Right Academy in April to guide newly qualified advisers through that journey.

Why passing CeMap is only the starting point

Achieving the Certificate in Mortgage Advice and Practice (CeMap) or the Chartered Insurance Institute‘s equivalent qualification confirms that a candidate understands the theory. It does not, by itself, qualify anyone to sit across a table from a client and give regulated advice. Rebecca Egerton, who heads The Right Academy, frames it clearly: qualifying before reaching competent adviser status (CAS) is like passing a driving theory test while still learning to handle a car. Both elements are necessary before anyone should be on the road alone.

The programme is open to appointed representative (AR) firms within The Right Mortgage’s network, which currently numbers over 400 AR firms. Trainees who are not already placed with one of those firms have two routes in: approaching an AR firm directly, or contacting the academy, which can refer them to a pool of nominated firms willing to consider trainees.

Structure of the mortgage adviser competent status programme

The academy opens with a three-day, face-to-face induction. Applicants cover regulatory requirements, compliance obligations and awareness of clients in vulnerable circumstances, alongside practical guidance on the systems used day-to-day by AR firms. The cohort that went through recently included a recent graduate, a former head teacher and an ex-nurse, reflecting the career-change profile that Egerton says is increasingly common, with ex-teachers and former police officers among frequent applicants.

A confidence-building session sits alongside the technical content. ‘You will get people who say, “I’m anxious and nervous.” Or, “I’ve got imposter syndrome.” All normal feelings,’ says Egerton. The session asks trainees to identify what they are already bringing to the role and how those qualities will serve clients.

Beyond the induction, trainees enter a supervised period in which they must hit defined key performance indicators, maintain an acceptable file-check pass rate, and keep their continuing professional development current. Online masterclasses cover sales skills, marketing, protection, standard and higher-risk mortgages, and unusual mortgage structures. Role-play assessments are a formal gate on the path to CAS; podcasts, webinars and demonstration videos are available on the network’s adviser site to help trainees prepare.

Trainees have up to 12 months to achieve CAS. The fastest completion Egerton has recorded for someone entirely new to the industry was five months. All of this sits under the oversight framework set by the Financial Conduct Authority, which requires firms to satisfy themselves that advisers are competent before permitting unsupervised client-facing work.

For anyone weighing a career change into mortgage advice, the structured path through CAS now has a clearer shape, and The Right Academy’s programme sets out precisely what those 12 months need to contain.
